Ask Council to Support Huizar Motion to Assert Authority Over Board Action
September 5, 2007

Please take action today to ensure equal environmental protections for El Sereno by writing a letter in support of Councilmember Jose Huizar’s motion to override the Board of Public Works’ (BPW) approval of building permits for Tract 35022, the controversial development of 24 luxury homes on Elephant Hill.

We also need to fill the Council Chambers, City Hall Room 340, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 11, 2007 when Councilmember Huizar’s motion comes before City Council.

In order for Huizar’s motion to pass and the Council to gain authority over the BPW action, a two thirds (2/3) vote by the full Council is required. This means there must be 10 votes in favor of this motion. Please take action today to ensure that reason and environmental justice prevail over the developer’s onerous tactics and insider politics. Together we can continue to make a difference!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1. Attend the City Council meeting at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 11, in Council Chambers, Room 340, City Hall., 200 S. Spring Street (enter on Main). We must fill the room to show support.

2. Write or email City Councilmembers asking them to support Huizar’s motion to assert authority over the BPW action on Tract 35022. See the sample letter below. The mailing address for all Councilmembers: 200 N. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. Email addresses:

Re: Motion Regarding Tract 35022 on Elephant Hill in El Sereno (File #: 04-1413)

Dear City Council Members:

As a Los Angeles resident I urge you to support Councilmember Jose Huizar’s motion to override the August 8, 2007 action of the Board of Public Works (BPW) to approve the building permit, final parcel map and other permits associated with the Tract 35022 (File # 04-1413).

The BPW action is contrary to the City Council’s 8 to 2 vote on June 20th to require a Supplemental Environmental Impact Report for this development of 24 luxury homes on Elephant Hill in El Sereno. No action on Tract 35022 should be taken until the SEIR is completed.

We urge the Council to support equitable environmental protections for El Sereno residents by voting in favor of Councilmember Huizar’s motion to assert jurisdiction over the BPW’s August 8th action on Tract 35022. Should the building permits issue be voted on during this hearing, we ask that the Council deny the building permits for this development.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
